Supporting Queensland's Indigenous outreach program

We were proud to support Eye and Ear doctor Fiona Hill’s participation in the ‘Deadly Ears’ Indigenous outreach program.
Dr Hill travelled to Doomadgee in rural Queensland to assist with the program which provides specialist outreach ENT clinics and surgeries for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children.
Each year, the Deadly Ears program runs 27 outreach weeks across 12 regional locations in Queensland.
Due to the low number of ENT doctors in the state they are grateful for the support of doctors like Fiona, from across Australia.
The outreach team work with the local medical staff to provide hearing tests, clinics and surgery for all the children in the community.
Dr Hill found the experience highly rewarding, with families keen to participate and the majority of children achieving excellent outcomes.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children have one of the highest rates of middle ear disease and hearing loss in the world. The outreach teams have seen over 15,000 children, carrying out 9,000 audiology assessments and 1,600 ENT surgeries since the program began.
